Listening to Mnemosyne, 2018

untitled, 2018
wood, watercolour

Listening to Mnemosyne takes as its theme our existential memory. Inspired by Hölderlin’s “reminding” verse, in this work I trace the being of Mnemosyne, the Goddess of Memory and the mother of the Muses. The canvases, a major element, lay for months on a forest floor in Swabia, a region with which Hölderlin was intimately familiar. Weather and animals that inhabit the forest “process” the canvasses and leave their traces behind. The ears cast in bronze allude to the “inner dialog with someone who is invisible to us”, through which subconscious things and potential reach our consciousness.
Listening to Mnemosyne thematisiert unser existenzielles Erinnern.
